Brian recently e-mailed me to tell me that...

I recently recorded an eight song EP featuring baritone ukulele.
It is available for free playback and download on soundcloud:
The songs are all duets for baritone uke
and voice (me) and electronic pianica (my daughter).
I would love to have you hear what we're doing.

Here's a link to a video of an original song I recently
posted on Ukulele Underground featuring the baritone ukulele:

Thank you Jeff for your constant advocacy for the baritone ukulele.

Be sure to hit the link and give the songs a listen.
There is a very solid selection of music to enjoy,
Including: Tom Waits, Cohen, Neil Young and Brian Eno.
Be sure to comment and give Brian some feedback!

Jonathan Mann || Please Forgive Me

Yeah, I know he's playing guitar.
But he's my bari playin' buddy too.
He writes a song a day and this one is one of his best.

This is Song A Day #2202.

I do a lot
But I could do so much more
I'm a lazy man
At my core
My ambition
And my fear
Put me here
They put me here

Please forgive me
My potential
Please forgive me
What I don't achieve
If I die tomorrow
And you're flying solo
Know I love you
Please forgive me

I'm only driving
Without a map
Like everyone else
I fill in the gaps
I give enough
To get things done
I don't know how
To give another one

I do a lot
But it's not enough
I wanna give
So goddamn much
In the early hours
When we're all alone
My mind is racing
I try to atone

Six Water Grog || Grasshopper Sitting on a Sweet Potato Vine

I am becoming a fan of Lanny and his Six Water Grog Blog. In this post Lanny is showing off a Fletcher tenor guitar and in the Grasshopper song, which I have played before on a dulcimer, but here he plays lead on the tenor and someone play baritone uke backing for a good sound.

Ivan & Brian || You Are My Sunshine

Brian - soprano uke, harmonica and lead vocal.
Ivan - baritone ukulele, double bass and harmonies.

Six Water Grog || Figuring it out for Yourself

Musical food for thought, using your ears...

http://www.sixwatergrog.com/2014/12/music-figuring-it-out-for-yourself.html

Lanny writes...
"This is supposed to be the melody to the tune Sefrial, track 2 on Medeski, Martin and Wood's "Zaebos: Book of Angels", a 2008 album of John Zorn compositions. I kinda figured it out by ear on tenor banjo last night just before going to bed, and then woke up this morning and decided to instantly try playing it on baritone ukulele, after humming it in my sleep! (I have a very cheap, no-name ukulele). What you're hearing is a recording made at 7am today, minutes after playing this tune for the first time on uke, and less than 12 hours after trying to learn it on tenor banjo. My apologies to actual musicians. It's probably not even Sefrial at all."

A J Leonard || I Can See Clearly Now

This video is from BeareTube or Terry C an Australian friend I made when collecting photos of Cliff Edwards on eBay. Terry is good friends with A.J. whom I met when he came to California and visited my home base of the Ukulele Club of Santa Cruz. A.J. is a fantastic player but this is the first video that I have seen of him playing a baritone ukulele. It is amazing how common interests can bring people together from around the world.

Terry C is a great fan of vintage Martin ukuleles. I wonder if there's a Martin bari in his collection now?

Ukucafe || Baritone Ukulele Songs

Sometime I am amazed at how many videos that I miss even when they are clearly labelled as baritone! Here's a collection of various gamer or anime themes that I hadn't heard before. I found them all quite enjoyable...

Ukucafe is a French website but there are english language translations as well. With some hunting thru the link above you may be able to find mostly GCEA, but also some DGBE tabs.

Waltz of Chihiro

Theme of Tapion (Wrath of the Dragon)

Underwater Waltz (Super Mario Brothers Theme) DGBE
https://ukucafe.files.wordpress.com/2009/05/underwater-waltz.pdf

Tsukimori Song (零 / Project Zero / Fatal Frame IV)

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles - Overworld theme (nes game)

Theme of Roxas (Kingdom Hearts 2) DGBE
https://ukucafe.files.wordpress.com/2009/05/kingdom_hearts_roxas.pdf

Also there are GCEA arrangements that could be played on a Low D DGBE tuned baritone ukulele, for instance, To River (To the Moon OST).

6-String || Ibanez AVT1 Artwood Vintage Tenor Parlor Acoustic 4 String Guitar Demo

In the following video, Dan Mumm indicates that the tenor guitar is normally tuned in 5th's CGDA like a viola, but it is adaptable to the background of a player of guitar, banjo, mandolin, or ukulele. For us bari-tone-uke players we could tune it DGBE (or DGBD for Open G tuning).

I have one of these Ibanez Artwood AVT1 tenor "parlour" guitars. Ibanez has paid attention to some finer details as you can see in this video. I have wanted to be able to try out a steel string instrument but I injured my left wrist in a cycling accident many years ago and find that in my few attempts in playing a guitar have triggered some discomfort.

I love the instrument. It takes a bit of play to get used to the steel strings after playing flourocarbon strings. Nylon strings are much softer on the fingers but the steel strings have a bit of punch & twang. The parlour design makes it feel just a step up in body size and the length is 36" vs 30" for the standard bari.

Let me know if you've had any experiences with a tenor guitar in DGBE or in standard tuning. I'd like to hear about your experiences.

Dave Matthews & Grover & Doctor Uke

I have watched many hours of Sesame Street since I had two brothers 8 and 9 years younger than me. I also have 4 grown children that had years of watching too. I came across this video of Dave Matthews playing Guitar-Banjo. Dave's finger's are all over the fretboard.

So watching Dave's fingers reminded me of the beauty of chord movement and the delicious sounds of the chord variations. I decided to check out Doctor Uke's site again. He has completely revamped the site since I was last there. And He has spent a lot of time getting BAR (baritone) arrangements for almost every tune. There are 1271 arrangements currently on the site -- WOW!

Logan || Video Games (Lana Del Rey Cover) (reprise)

ShortGrainMusic || At the Mid Hour of Night (1813)

SGM writes,
This Irish folk song is from the 5th volume of Irish Melodies by the poet Thomas Moore and arranger John Stevenson published in 1813. Many classical singers know this song from the collection of folksong arrangements by Benjamin Britten (1913-1976). The melody is slightly different from Britten's arrangement, which used the melody "O Molly, dear!" collected by Edward Bunting from a harper in 1800. Instead of using Stevenson's accompaniment, (which seems a bit too reliant on tonic and dominant chords for such an old tune), I've made my own minimalistic arrangement to highlight the melody.
