Mark Kailana Nelson || Slack Key Ukulele Lessons

Mark is playing a low G tenor uke, but as he says this could sound real good on a low D baritone ukulele as well...

Sandor's New Project...

Stay tuned...

Photo: Humble Uker with Lil Rev's Mya-Moe Resonator Baritone Ukulele

Last Thursday, I made another trip to see my good friends at the Ukulele Club of Santa Cruz. One of these friends is the headliner of the night, Lil Rev. He gave a right hand techniques class before the club meeting and I had a chance to sit and talk with him for a while. I started his blog, "Fountain of Uke" for him and kept it running for about a year as he traveled around the country. I recommend you peruse his blog periodically, especially if your a fan of old-time music.

Rev is a teacher, writer and multi-instrumentalist. He writes for Hal Leonard Music and wrote a book for the beginning baritone ukulele player that maintains his superb quality and personality exudes from his pages. My favorite Lil' Rev Book to date is his 101 Licks for the Ukulele. It is written for a standard GCEA uke but it has so much to offer that a little extra effort to re-label the book is well worth the time.

Rev. has a recent blog post about his support of Mya-Moe ukuleles, link. At the end he tells about the Mya-Moe system of updating buyer of the status of their ukes in production. I have bought a custom uke and talked to many others about the tortuous process. Mya-Moe sounds like someone with a business background brought a great idea to the ukulele luthier world.

Jonathan Mann || Death, Death, Death

I think we are lucky to have Jonathon continuously creating new songs. This one is so direct and also, like the previous post "Compassion" shows his heart.

Aoife O'Donovan (Crooked Still) || Come On in my Kitchen

There's no bari in this video but Aoife does play the bari. I love the energy in this song and wanted to try a bari version'

Jonathan Mann || Compassion (Song a Day #1514)

Compassion
Song A Day #1514

G# Fm C#
Compassion is not a sexy word
G# Fm C#
But on you darlin It's so sexy it's absurd
C# D# G#
When you're laughing at yourself
G# D# C#
When you're smiling about it all
C# D# G#
The mistakes and cranky feelings
G# D# C#
That drip down your inner walls
D#
I fall in love

Compassion is a word so steeped in stuff
It's dismissible even though there's clearly not enough
And you're staring at me
Across a great divide
Telling me how it is
No running, numbing hide
I fall in love

Fm D# C#
Can you love yourself
C# D# G#
As much as I love you
Can you forgive
All the mistakes you do
In my arms
Our normal you are true
D#
You are you

Compassion is best with no pretense
We're hard, hard wired to feel it for our friends
But when it comes to ourselves
The story gets delayed
So when I see you doing it
My heart's in full display
I fall in love

Can you love yourself
As much as I love you
Can you forgive
All the mistakes you do
In my arms
Our normal you are true
You are you

Circuits & Strings || Bedpan Bari

Tony Catalano || Folksong

I have got to ask Tony about the tuning on his baritone. It was deep and rich. I watched the video a few times including some full-screen viewing. I enjoyed the musical and video creativity that added to the whole experience.

Uke of Carl || Falling (Twin Peaks music)

This is a haunting tune from the Twin Peaks series. Wendy and I watched it for its quirkiness. The first season had us eagerly watching each episode but the second season felt a bit meandering for us. To me, it was a shame to end the way it did without getting any closure...

I love the tune though. Carl has a 5-string baritone ukulele. Listen to this one on a baritone guitar...

Doofus Music || Music Class

I recently bought a dulcimer after viewing many inriguing videos on YouTube. So, as usual, I set about hunting the internet for dulcimer music websites. I found out that there were several opportunities in the San Francisco Bay Area and was in my hometown in the east bay hills.

The class was sponsored by a local woman that is an Autoharp and Dulcimer player. The instructor was Neal Walters from Greencastle, Pennsylvania and it turned out that Neal is also a baritone ukulele player and he asked me to send him an e-mail with a link to Humble Baritonics.

Neal and his wife Coleen have a website with links for both autoharp and dulcimer music, called Doofus Music. The site has tablature for a list of old timey type music that some baritone ukulele players may find fun to try. You can't find Grasshopper Sittin' on a Sweetpotato Vine just anywhere.

Here, looks like Neal is playing a bari in the background.

Since the class was full of newbies and Neal kept the information quite simple. The most memorable for me was:

1) "Play rhythmically, know the chords of the song and listen, don't be held back by always requiring a piece of paper. In this way you can learn thousands of songs."

2) "If you are learning the melody / arrangement of a song. Practice small portions, put the paper away, play again and repeat as often as necessary to memorize. The next morning try again. If necessary get the paper out look and put it away again."

Phil Hendricks || Sidewalk Shuffle Blues

I totally love the blues on  a bari. Phantastic Phil...

Taylor Noelle || Your Mine (original)

Uke Val || Santiago de Murcia - Allegro

Valéry Sauvage plays Michael Parmentier's vintage baroque translation...

Michael has been my long distance e-friend for a while now. I noticed that I didn't have a link to his blog in the song link bar, but only below in the blogs section. I've added a link too now, Classical Ukulele Tabs. Michael divides his creative time between building instruments and making jewelry. My wife has some of his metal work jewelry earring creations.

This is performed in Low G, but the same fingerings are used on a Low D bari and you'll just get a deeper version in another key. Thank you Valéry for sharing one of Michael's arrangements.

The Brown Videos || Room in You Brain (Grand Theft Bus cover)

Room in Your Brain lyrics

Jonathan Mann || Magic & Technology

Jonathan's Baritone ukulele is probably the most beat up baritone uke in the world that shows up on YouTube videos. The uke has gotten a lot of use creating songs and I suspect that Jon has created his own sound hole in the top front as you can see in this video.

The previously posted video of Jon Braman shows off the baritone ukulele that he found in the trash and I don't think it has come near to the Song-A-Day Mann's bashed-up bari.

I am a big fan of Jonathan Mann's creations, and here is Magic & Technology...

Magic And Technology
Song A Day #1498

Eb Bb
i wanna rewrite reality
Eb Bb
I wanna reinterpret every natural law
Ab Eb
So the only things that can hurt me
Ab Bb
Are things that won't hurt me at all

That's the way we gonna do it in the future
Where magic and technology are one
when the ash and the blood and the water
are all mixing beneath the dying sun

oh my darling do not worry about it now
now it is the age of fleeting death
just look out upon everything you've made
breathe life into every single breath

i wanna rewrite reality
I wanna reinterpret every natural law
So the only things that can hurt me
Are things that won't hurt me at all

Phil's version of Georgia sent me on a little hunt for some more tunes. I came across this from 2008. Some real good stuff...
