I had heard that the Kingston Trio had regularly used a baritone ukulele. This video shows a 4 string instrument but is it a tenor guitar or a bari-uke? I am leaning towards a TG. Is there anyone that knows any better? The second video shows the instrument on the album cover early in the video.
So, it's settled as a Tenor Guitar. Thanks to Larry, who left a comment with a terrific link for us... http://www.kingstontrio.com/pdfs/nick_reynolds_guitar.pdf
Nick grew up here in San Diego as a navy brat, his dad taught him uke. But I believe he played the tenor guitar in the group, from what I've read anyway. You should post up They Call the Wind Maria, I'm learning that right now, TKT's is a badass version anyways, lots of rhythm and beatnik bongos and growly vocals and good stuff, uh-huh...nice vid post.
ReplyDeleteHello Sissy. Thanks so much for the history. The videos I saw of They Call the Wind Mariah are from reincarnations of the band. There is a relatively new one...

It is a tenor guitar, but I believe he did tune it DGDE. It started a craze for tenor guitars. See: http://www.kingstontrio.com/pdfs/nick_reynolds_guitar.pdf
ReplyDeleteI guess it's a Tenor Guitar. It has geared Tuners and a Pickguard, what is quites unsusal for a Baritone Ukes, at least at these times. Also the Neck seems to be very narrow, waht is typical for the Tenor Guitar, coming from the Banjo.
