Nipper the Baritone Uker Profile

I was watching a ukulele duet and noticed Nipper was playing the same fingerings as the soprano ukulele player. So I wonder, Nipper must be playing GCEA tuning on his Bari?

  1. Hi! I'm TonyS, the soprano player in Nipper's video. He's using Venezualane cuatro tuning on the Favila bari: that's GCEA - low G and the A an octave lower than usual (de-entrant?). Gives a real depth of sound to Paul's dance, but I don't think it sounds that good strummed.

  2. Thanks Tony -- I don't get on this blog as much as my other Humble Uker blog. I need to do some more updates because I have seen a few more good Baritone videos recently. Jeff

  3. Hi HumbleUker,
This is a fantastic blog! I should have been in touch earlier.
TonyS is indeed right about my tuning, however I disagree with his analysis of the strummed sound; the tuning is perfect for strumming. I use the tuning on all my baritones and you can hear it on all The Night Owls videos. It is important to get the string tensions right, but when you do it can really make a baritone sing with a new and exciting voice. I also think strumming a baritone requires a totally different touch to playing the smaller ukuleles and so it does require a good deal of practice to get the best sound from the instrument.

I must say that you are my absolutely favorite Pashley riding baritone uker. I have been paying quite a bit more attention to this blog over the last year and it has become full of videos of vibrant bari-players.

I love your music, bicycles and videos. Thanks for compliment on the blog.
