Armelle || Discovering the Joys of Songwriting on the Ukulele & Guitar

Armelle has been blogging about the ukulele and has her focus on the variety of languages in ukulele songs. Her posts celebrate the diversity of the worldwide ukulele community. I thought that her recent post might be interesting to bari uke players starting to think about creating their own music.

Discovering the Joys of Songwriting...

She has also played a bit of baritone ukulele and she created a song, Maelström.

Zeke Leonard || Staircase in the Key of D

I have been checking out Zeke's blog, each and every post, he creates instruments out of found objects. Many are based on the ukulele and he's a fan of DGBE tuning. Here's a video on one of his projects...

The Haunted Windchimes || Hour Concert at the Pueblo Library

Concert from 2012... I've gotta say that I really love their sound. If you haven't heard them before you will get a good dose right here. They're playing old-school with everyone playing and singing around a single mic. I had a small chance to talk with Desiree and the bassist in Santa Cruz, Ca. The bassist is a big fan of the ukulele.

There is another band with Aoife O'Donovan, called Crooked Still that plays much of the same style but more traditionally leaned old-timey blue grassy material. Aoife is the lead singer and I had found photos of her with a bari a few years back but only guitars in the most recent hunts.

And sticking in the same genre is another band with the headliner Gillian Welch. Her partner and guitarist is David Rawlings and is a great player just to watch. I saw this video earlier today that I
favorite and will share, here.

The Haunted Windchimes

The Haunted Windchimes are one of my favorite bands that has a member that plays a vintage Vega baritone ukulele. That's Desiree Garcia. I saw the group play once in Santa Cruz. I see that they're playing in Colorado at the Fine Arts Center on January 11, 2014. There music is a fantastic blend of Roots type music that is becoming popular around America.

I also was reminded that THW was on Garrison Keillor's Prairie Home Companion. Has anyone had the chance to see the band and care to leave a comment?

Take a look at their FaceBook page and get an image of the band and Desiree with her baritone uke. Take a look at their FB Foto Stream.
