Ed Grosso || Vintage Songs on Zim-Gar baritone ukulele

Not all bari uke videos are labelled as such and I know I must miss many great videos. I was very glad to read Joo's e-mail about a talent that I had missed, Ed Grosso. If you know of a video, player, or lesson that you think others would enjoy then please send me a note like Joo from Singapore's below.

Hi Humble Uker,
Greetings from Singapore!
My name is Joo and I love your site.
Thanks for putting this up for us bari uke lovers.
Have you seen any of Ed Grosso's videos?
I think he played many of the old songs on his baritone too.
There is one here, http://youtu.be/fmC1ngdQ6Gg

There are more videos of him playing what looks and sounds like a bari uke..
Hope you like them too!
Joo

AIN'T MISBEHAVING

IT HAD TO BE YOU

(Ed notes... "It Had to Be You" is a popular song written by Isham Jones with lyrics by Gus Kahn, and was first published in 1924. The song was performed by Priscilla Lane in the 1939 film The Roaring Twenties and by Danny Thomas in the 1951 film I'll See You in My Dreams. The latter film was based loosely upon the lives of Gus Kahn and his wife Grace LeBoy Kahn. It was also performed by Dooley Wilson in the 1942 film Casablanca, and by Diane Keaton in the 1977 film Annie Hall.)

UP A LAZY RIVER
(Ed notes... (Up a) Lazy River" is a popular song by Hoagy Carmichael and Sidney Arodin , published in 1930. The song is considered a jazz and pop standard, and has been recorded by many artists including: Bobby Darin, The Mills Brothers, Louis Armstrong and the Grateful Dead.)

SWEET SUE
(Ed notes... Sweet Sue - Just You words by Will Harris, Music by Victor Young - Copyright 1928)

If you like Ed, you'll surely also like jazz and blues man DrBekken from Norway. Listen to "All I Do Is Dream Of You" for a little sampler.

Scott Rogers || Clawhammer Bari Goodness

The Corporate Commedian (Clawhammer)

 The Kitchen Girl (Clawhammer)

 Waterbound (Clawhammer)

"Hi Jeff... here's a link http://bluesageband.com/Tabs.html. This is a site with lots of tabs in several tunings. They're written for banjo but baritone players can just ignore the fifth string notations. Some tunes use the fifth string as part of the melody but with a bit of lateral thinking one can find a work around." (Scott's response to my inquiry from a couple of years back)

Fretboard Toolbox || Holiday Tunes for the Baritone Ukulele 2

http://www.fretboard-toolbox.com/baritoneholidaytunes.html

Scott Sharp has put together more information and music to support the baritone ukulele community. He has a 15 minute video that provides the details of his work. He also has backing tracks played on guitar at varying speeds.

I appreciate and like to support all who take the time to share bari-uke knowledge with the world.

Guido Heistek || Chipmunk Song for Solo Ukulele (Christmas Don't Be Late) w/ tab

Guido has something good going on here with The Chipmunk's Christmas song chord melody. Even though he's arranged this with a standard high-G GCEA uke in mind, I gave it a whirl with both high-D and low-DGBE tuned baris. The arrangement was quite simple for me and a pleasure to play. It works for both high and low tuned ukes because the melody is driven by the high #1 string.

There is also a bit more challenging version 2.

Here Guido talks about his beautiful Mya-Moe ukulele...

And Guido has more, part-time performers read this.

Casey J Chapman || Silver Bells

A soft & soothing finger-style version...

Andrew Morse || One Meatball (Hy Zaret and Lou Singer)

Andrew provides another spectacular version of this song...

I first heard this song on a version by my talented and entertaining friend, Lil' Rev. He gives a little bit of history in his GCEA-uke performance below. This performance was from the  Portland Ukulele Festival in 2006. He's also a baritone ukulele player and has written a beginning baritone ukulele player book for Hal Leonard called, Baritone Ukulele Book One.

I also had a hand in getting Lil' Rev blogging and sharing his insights therein. You can see his blog by clicking, Fountain of Uke.

Jenni & Mom || White Christmas duet

The baritone ukulele player should know that Jenni has a site with some Baritone Ukulele arrangements. Jenni and her mom are friends of mine that I sometimes meet at the Ukulele Club of Santa Cruz. If you play the ukulele and are travelling near Santa Cruz (1 hour south of San Francisco on the coast) you should consider visiting this club. It normally gathers the 3rd Thursday of the month at Bocci's Cellar. Leave a comment if you need more information.

Jenni's music is on her Kukana's Uke Klub page for Baritone.
